What is an Electrician?

​​An Electrician is a trained, skilled tradesman who combines basic and theoretical knowledge of operating characteristics of electrical equipment and devices, along with physical dexterity, and skill to adequately and safely wire residential, commercial, industrial and other types of facilities. The Electrician's services enable the consumer to use electrical energy for lighting and operating electrical equipment such as motors, appliances, control systems, etc.

Program Overview

The IEC Apprenticeship is a four-year program registered with the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded a certificate of completion by the United States of America, DOL, and are recognized anywhere you may want to live or work in America.

Industry Recognized Certification of Completion awarded students:

  • ​1st Year Electrical Apprenticeship LEVEL 1 - for completion of such studies in Math, Identification of Tools And materials; OHMS law; Residential wiring; introduction to the National Electrical Code; Conduit bending, DC theory and Safety.

  • 2nd Year Electrical Apprenticeship LEVEL 2 - for completion of such studies in National Electrical Code, AC Theory, Transformer theory and Code, Motor theory and Controls, Code and Safety

  • 3rd Year Electrical Apprenticeship LEVEL 3 - for completion of such studies in Grounding and Bonding, Blueprint Reading, Motor Controls I and Safety

  • 4th Year Electrical Apprenticeship LEVEL 4 - for completion of such studies in Motor Controls II, NEC Study, Fire Alarm, Limited Energy programs, Safety

  • Graduates sit for state of Texas Electrical Licensing Exam to earn their Journeyman License

UPON GRADUATION FROM IEC DALLAS APPRENTICESHIP - each graduate receives the following:

Certificate from the IEC National organization showing completion of the 4-year apprenticeship training program as prescribed by the Standards of Apprenticeship registered with the US Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship and Training.

Certificate from the US Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship to certify the student's completion of an apprenticeship for the occupation of Electrician under the sponsorship of IEC Dallas in accordance with the basic standards of Apprenticeship established by the U. S. Secretary of Labor.


College Credit -IEC is committed to enhancing your career trajectory by offering college credits to students of the IEC Apprentice Program.
The Independent Electrical Contractors, Inc. (IEC) is proud to partner with the American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT®) to offer college credit to students of IEC’s Apprenticeship program.

The American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT®) has evaluated and recommended college credit for IEC’s Apprenticeship Program. Founded in 1918, ACE is the major coordinating body for all the nation’s higher education institutions, representing more than 1,600 college and university presidents and more than 200 related associations nationwide.

IEC apprentices can receive college credit for each of their four-year training program, up to 46 credit hours. This benefit will not only make earning a college degree a more affordable reality for you, it supports IEC’s belief in the importance of lifelong learning.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Social security card
  • Current Drivers License / Reliable transportation
  • One of the following:  High School transcript, Diploma or GED scores
  • Evidence of previous electrical experience (if any, not required)
  • Letter of recommendation from a current or previous employer
  • If Veteran, copy of DD 214
  • Successful completion and passing a background check and drug screen
  • Must apply for and receive a state electrical Apprenticeship License from state of Texas
  • Registration with Selective Service

FAQ's
How long does it take to complete the Electrical Apprenticeship Program?
Approximately four (4) Years to complete the four (4) level program of 8,000 hours on the job (OJT) training hours, 576 hours of classroom hours with passing grades and passing the required state of Texas journeyman exam to receive your state electrical license.

How long is class and how many nights a week is class held?
Class is held one night a week (4 hours) if you begin in September.  For those students joining the program in January, class is two nights (4 hours each) a week.

My company has me traveling around the state, is there an online course I can take?
YES! Currently, IEC Dallas offers both blended and online training. The blended class is together on zoom one week and in the building the following week. The online class is live on zoom, one night a week.  The online option does offer optional labs.

FEES - (cash/credit card)
  • $25 Application fee when you make application to the program
  • $50 Registration fee due when you are accepted into the program and prior to taking your drug screen and background check.

​​APPRENTICE TUITION - your tuition is deducted from your pay each week by your employer and sent to IEC. Tuition is based on a cents per hour for each hour worked.

  • 1st period- 1, 000 hours of OJT is.38 cents per hour for each hour worked
  • 2nd period - 1,001-2000 hours of OJT is .42 cents per hour for each hour worked
  • 3rd period - 2001-3000 hours of OJT is .47 cents per hour for each hour worked
  • 4th period - 3001-4000 hours of OJT is .49 cents per hour for each hour worked
  • 5th period - 4001-6000 hours of OJT is .59 cents per hour for each hour worked
  • 6th period - 6001-8000 hours of OJT is .64 cents per hour for each hour worked

CONTRACTOR TUITION
Along with your membership dues, there is a weekly fee of $17 for each Apprentice in the program.

Unless state funding for the program is available, students must purchase books

TO BEGIN WORK
  • Applicant must first successfully pass a drug screen and background check when interview is complete, and you are accepted into the program. $50 registration fee must be paid.
  • After two weeks of employment with IEC contractor member, apprentice will be registered into the program with Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, DOL.
  • Applicant must furnish his/her own tools from list supplied by IEC.
  • Must have valid state of Texas Electrical Apprenticeship License or cannot begin work.

​The following information is provided to answer questions you may have regarding the IEC Apprenticeship Program:
  • Students work full time while attending class one night each week, 5:30 - 9:30 p.m., from September through May of each year. Students do not attend class during summer months. Students are required to complete 576 hours of classroom training as part of their graduation requirements.
  • You are supervised by a Journey level licensed electrician for all your on-the-job training while you are enrolled in the IEC program. You must complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training as one of the requirements for graduation.
  • IEC instructors are Master electricians with field and teaching experience.
  • You will receive regular wage increases while enrolled in the IEC program.
  • Your company supervisor will submit quarterly field progress reports to the IEC Apprenticeship committee to help monitor your progress in learning.
  • Graduation ceremonies with cap/gown are standard practice. Students may be awarded a minimum 37 hours of college credit for completion of program.
  • Students must pass each semester's work with a minimum grade of 70 in order to be promoted to the next semester in the program.
  • Attendance requirements are strict. All students must attend class weekly.
  • Students are required to maintain their attendance in the workplace. It is important that all students comply with the workplace requirements as set forth by their employing company.
  • Students may not seek work elsewhere while enrolled in the IEC Apprenticeship program unless he/she plans to quit the program.
